Animal Management, Ecology & Conservation

Across our Animal Management, Ecology and Conservation programmes, students develop valuable theoretical knowledge alongside practical, hands-on experience across a diverse range of subject areas. From captive animal health, behaviour and welfare to wildlife conservation and habitat management, students gain industry-relevant skills in both managed and natural environments.

Champion the wellbeing of domestic and exotic animals

At UCS’s Cannington Campus, students study within our state-of-the-art Animal Management Centre, home to more than 300 animal species and an extensive collection of traditional and exotic animals. From mammals and birds to reptiles and amphibians, the centre provides an immersive learning environment that enhances theoretical study through regular practical experience in animal health, behaviour, welfare, husbandry, and enrichment.

Students also benefit from access to a range of on- and off-site conservation habitats that support ecological and conservation training throughout the programme. Our on-campus conservation area helps students develop essential fieldwork and habitat management skills, while local sites including Steart Marshes, one of the UK’s largest working nature reserves, provide outstanding opportunities for field studies, research, and the observation of native wildlife, including otters and a wide variety of bird species.

“The working environment at UCS is fantastic and gives you loads of first-hand experience. I work part time as a zookeeper, and it’s been great to have new knowledge and experiences to use in the industry. In the future I would love to be a head keeper in a zoo.”
