Hi, I’m Skye, and I’m studying Carpentry. What I enjoy most about my course is how practical it is. There’s very little book work, as most of what we do is hands-on, which suits my learning style perfectly. I learn best by doing, so I find this approach really effective.
Currently, I’m working on a door frame project. It takes a lot of patience because you need to ensure everything is very square, and you have to carefully fit wedges and joints to make sure everything is even. It’s quite detailed work, but I enjoy the challenge, and I know these skills will be valuable for my future.
I definitely see myself doing site carpentry later on, and I believe working on projects like this is excellent preparation. The course is helping me broaden my skills and build my confidence. I’ve already noticed my confidence growing, and I’m now much more comfortable using power tools and saws than I was at the beginning.
The key skills I believe are important for this course are patience and confidence. These are what I focus on most. If I were talking to a Year 10 or 11 student who’s unsure about studying carpentry, I’d say, “Go for it! Do whatever you think will suit you best.”
My next step to reach my goal of working on-site is to find an apprenticeship in carpentry. I’ve also applied for a Level 2 full-time course here at college to keep developing my skills. The variety of equipment and tools available here really helps us prepare for a future career in carpentry.
