READ SAM’S STORY

One of the best things about this course is how much of it is outdoors. We’re not stuck in classrooms all the time. Even on theory days, we go on walks around woodlands, learning about trees by actually seeing them in front of us. It makes the learning experience much more engaging and fun.

During our practical sessions, we get to work with chainsaws, handsaws, loppers, and more. Of course, we always wear the correct PPE, like hard hats, chainsaw trousers, and boots. I’ve learned how to be safe around the tools and how to use them properly. This not only helps me stay safe but also ensures I can work efficiently while avoiding fatigue, by using the right techniques and muscles.

We go on many trips, and we also have industry professionals visit us to talk about different tools, PPE brands, and emerging technologies such as virtual reality training. It’s been really helpful to hear from people with different experiences and perspectives, giving us a broader view of the industry.

My ambition is to become a climbing arborist and eventually run my own business in the arboriculture industry. To be a climbing arborist, you need to stay calm and focused when working at heights, and safety is key. You have to connect your carabiners correctly, take your time, and never rush. You could be high up in the trees, so doing everything safely is absolutely essential. I believe the college has supported me well in preparing for this.

Whenever we do practical exercises, health and safety are always a top priority. The college makes sure we understand everything thoroughly so that if anything does go wrong, we know exactly what to do and where to go. It’s a very safe and effective way to learn and build confidence in this industry

The skills I’ve gained from practical lessons have definitely improved my employability. I now know what I’m doing and have valuable hands-on experience, which I can pass on to more experienced workers. The college has also been really supportive, answering all my questions about what to do next and providing contacts that will help me find work In the future.
