I study Nuclear Engineering at the National College for Nuclear. I’ve always been interested in science and technology, so this course feels like a perfect fit for me. What I really enjoy is the coursework-based approach, as I prefer working at my own pace rather than sitting exams. The subjects we cover are really varied, from maths and physics to engineering principles, which keeps things interesting and challenging.

Although the course is mostly theory-based, we still get plenty of opportunities to work hands-on in the workshops, taking apart components and learning about how the systems fit together. The facilities here are outstanding: everything is modern, high-tech, and built to a professional standard. It’s a great environment to learn in, and I feel lucky to have access to such high-quality equipment.

I’m currently on a degree apprenticeship pathway, which means I’ll soon be getting paid while I study. The connection between the college and Hinkley Point is a huge advantage. The team from Hinkley Point recently visited to interview us, and I was selected for a work experience placement in June. I’m really looking forward to that opportunity, as it’s a big step towards my future career.

My journey to college can be long, but it’s absolutely worth it. The opportunities, the teaching, and the environment make every minute worthwhile. This course is not only giving me the skills and knowledge I need but also the confidence and connections to build a successful career in nuclear engineering.

The college has been really supportive, providing us with lots of information and industry insight. We’ve had guest speakers from the sector come in to talk about the different roles and pathways available after graduation, which has helped me understand how to apply what I’m learning to real-world careers.
