Hi, I’m Maddison, and I’m studying Barbering. What I enjoy most about  my course is the creativity involved. I love knowing that I can make  people look and feel their best, especially during these challenging times  where many of us struggle with confidence, money, and mental health. 

Being able to help boost someone’s self-esteem and brighten their day  is incredibly rewarding for me. 

When I first started the course, I’d never even picked up a pair of clippers before, so I was quite nervous. But now, I can confidently do a  fade and create stylish cuts, which has really boosted my confidence  and passion for the craft. This course has helped me develop my skills and believe in myself more. 

I see a future in barbering as a potential career. I want to work as a  mobile barber because I enjoy making people feel good about  themselves. I also have a special interest in working with children and  adults who are neurodivergent, such as those with autism. I understand  that some people find it difficult to get a haircut in a traditional salon  environment, and I would love to help them feel more comfortable and  confident while getting their hair cut, because I believe everyone  deserves that opportunity. 

The facilities at college are fantastic because they replicate a real  barbershop environment. We have everything from UV cabinets to Barbicide, so we’re well prepared for the professional world. Working in  this environment helps us understand health and safety procedures and  get ready for real-life work in a shop. Working on real people rather than mannequins has made a huge  difference. Mannequins can’t always mimic the hair reactions of real hair  on actual clients. For example, when I do highlights, the results can vary  depending on hair type. Practicing on real people helps me see how  different hair reacts to products and techniques, giving me a better  understanding of how to achieve the best outcome for everyone.
